There are moments in Scripture where something clicks so deeply, you realize…
God has been saying the same thing all along.
Recently, I found myself sitting in that kind of moment.
Two passages.
Two different writers.
Two different covenants.
But one voice.
OPEN THE WORD
Deuteronomy 30:11–14
“This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach.
It is not kept in heaven… nor is it beyond the sea…
No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.”
1 John 5:3–4
“Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.”
THE CONNECTION I COULDN’T IGNORE
Moses says:
It’s not too hard.
It’s not far away.
It’s already near you.
John says:
It’s not burdensome.
You’ve already overcome.
You’ve been born of God.
And I just sat there thinking…
How is it that before Jesus came, Moses could say obedience wasn’t out of reach…
And after Jesus, John could say it’s not even heavy?
WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT BEGAN TO SHOW ME
Obedience was never meant to be something we strain to reach.
Even in the Old Testament, God was already revealing:
His Word is not distant
His ways are not hidden
His commands are not impossible
But now—through Jesus—something has changed.
It’s no longer just:
The Word is near you…
Now it’s:
The Spirit lives in you.
Now obedience isn’t just accessible…
It’s internal.
WHY IT SOMETIMES STILL FEELS HARD
Let’s be honest.
If His commands aren’t burdensome…
why do they sometimes feel that way?
Because we slip back into trying to do externally
what can only be lived out internally.
We strive.
We overthink.
We perform.
And without realizing it, we disconnect from the very Source that makes obedience light.
THE SHIFT
The Holy Spirit gently brought this into focus for me:
You don’t obey to become someone new.
You obey because you already are.
Moses pointed to nearness
John revealed newness
And together they remind us:
You are not reaching for something far away.
You are responding to something already placed within you.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
If you’ve been feeling like following God is heavy…
Pause.
Not to try harder—
but to reconnect.
Ask yourself:
Am I striving… or abiding?
Am I performing… or responding?
Am I trying to become… or living from who He already made me?
Because the truth is:
His Word is near
His Spirit is within
And His commands flow from love—not pressure
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Where has obedience felt heavy or overwhelming lately?
In that area, am I striving in my own strength or staying connected to the Holy Spirit?
What would it look like to respond from love instead of obligation?
How does knowing “it’s already within me” change the way I approach obedience today?
PRAYER
Father,
Thank You that Your ways are not distant and Your commands are not too hard for me.
Thank You that You didn’t just show me what to do—you placed Your Spirit within me so I could walk it out.
Teach me how to abide instead of strive.
Remind me that obedience flows from love, not pressure.
Quiet the places in me that feel overwhelmed, and bring me back to the simplicity of being with You.
Help me live from who You’ve already made me to be.
In Jesus’ Precious Name, Amen.
